Your Summer Plant Survival Guide for Central Ohio Homes

Summer in Columbus is generally an amazing time for your houseplant collection. The longer days and increased light give tropical plants the energy boost they need to put out their best growth of the year. However, summer also introduces a unique set of environmental changes inside your home. From blasting air conditioning to shifting light intensities, these things require you to tweak your care routines.

To help your collection thrive instead of just surviving the coming months, here is exactly what changes inside a Columbus home during the summer and how to adjust.

What Changes Inside Your Home in the Summer

1. Light Intensity and Duration

Not only are the days longer, but the sun sits higher in the sky. Windows that received mild light in April can become intense, scorching hot by July. A plant that was perfectly happy sitting directly on a south-facing windowsill in the spring might start developing bleached, crispy sunburn spots as the summer heat intensifies.

2. Soil Drying Faster

Because plants are actively growing and temperatures are higher, they will consume water at a much faster rate than they did a few months ago. A plant you used to water every two weeks might suddenly need a thorough soak every five to seven days.

3. The Air Conditioning Trap

Central Ohio summers can get incredibly humid, which tropical plants love. However, when we run our air conditioning to stay comfortable, the AC units strip that beneficial moisture straight out of the air. Also, the forced cold air creates localized draft zones that can shock sensitive species.

Summer Routines to Build Right Now

1. The Watering Audit

Ditch your calendar schedules completely. Instead, get into the habit of doing a physical check of your plants' soil every few days. Stick your finger two inches into the dirt to check the moisture. If it's dry, water it thoroughly until liquid runs out of the drainage holes.

2. Open the Fertilizer Window

Because your plants are working overtime to push out new leaves, they need fuel! Summer is the prime window to use a high-quality organic fertilizer every second or third watering. We carry liquid fertilizer drops in the shops that make this a super easy process.

3. Finish Your Repotting Early

If any of your plants are severely root-bound, try to shift them into a slightly larger pot before the hottest weeks of late July and August arrive. Repotting during extreme heatwaves can cause unnecessary transplant stress.

The Columbus Specific: The Tap Water

Here is a local tip many plant parents overlook: because you are watering your plants much more frequently in the summer, they are being exposed to a higher volume of tap water.

Central Ohio tap water contains fluoride and chlorine. While hardy plants like Pothos tolerate this perfectly, sensitive tropicals like Calatheas, Spider Plants, and Alocasias, can experience a buildup of these minerals in their soil. Combined with the dry air from your AC, this mineral buildup often shows up as severe brown tips on your leaves. If you notice this happening, switch to using distilled water for your most sensitive plants during the peak summer months.
