Rare Houseplants Worth the Hype

Rare Houseplants Worth the Hype

The rare plant world has gotten a little... noisy. A few years ago, "rare" meant something a bit different than it does now in the scene of plants. Between the viral TikTok trends and the wishlist culture, it’s hard to tell which plants are actually beautiful, resilient investments and which ones are just expensive heartbreaks waiting to happen.

If you’re ready to level up your collection, you want a plant that offers more than just bragging rights. You want something that grows reliably and looks stunning in your living room. Here are five "rare" plants that actually live up to the hype!

1. Monstera Thai Constellation

Why we love it: Unlike the Albo Monstera, the "Thai" has stable variegation. Those creamy, starry splashes won’t revert, meaning you won’t wake up to a solid green leaf.

Care/Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. It grows slower than a standard Monstera and is slightly more prone to root rot, so keep the soil chunky.

2. Alocasia Dragon Scale

Why we love it: The texture is otherworldly. The leaves are thick, metallic, and look more like hammered silver or dragon’s wing than a living plant.

Care/Difficulty: Moderate. Like most Alocasias, it will prefer some extra humidity. In our dry Columbus winters, you’ll definitely want a humidifier nearby.

3. Anthurium Veitchii

Why we love it: The deeply corrugated, long pendant leaves are the ultimate addition for any indoor jungle. It’s architectural and undeniably beautiful as it matures.

Care/Difficulty: Moderate to Advanced. It’s an Aroid, meaning it loves airy roots and very consistent moisture. It’s for the parent who enjoys the "ritual" of care.

4. Monstera Burle Marx Flame

Why we love it: It doesn't look like your typical Monstera, the narrow, deeply lobed leaves look like green flames or ribcages. As it matures, the leaves will get fenestrations and continue to size up!

Care/Difficulty: Moderate. Most Monstera are generally tough, and this one is no different once it’s established. The biggest thing is getting it staked up to get the best looking, mature leaves you want.

5. Ghost Cactus

Why we love it: It is nearly pure white. It looks different from your regular cactus and provides an incredible color contrast to an otherwise all-green collection.

Care/Difficulty: Easy. If you have a bright, sunny window and can remember not to overwater it, you’re golden!

Before you drop a lot of money on a plant, ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Do I have the lighting? Most rare plants (especially variegated ones) need more light than their green counterparts to maintain their color.
  2. Do I have the right humidity? A lot of rare plants such as Anthuriums and Alocasia, are going to want a boost of humidity, make sure you can provide that if you go with these kind of plants.
  3. Have I mastered the "Common" version? If your standard Monstera is struggling, hold off on the Thai Constellation for now.

Rare plants come with a higher price tag than the more common variety. Price-wise, this can vary on how easy they are to grow and propagate, what kind of variegation the plant has, etc. Care-wise, expect to spend an extra 10 minutes a week checking humidity levels and inspecting for pests. Rare plants aren't necessarily "harder" to keep alive, but the stakes are a little higher.
