Tradescantia plants are quite the showstoppers of the indoor gardening world. They are known for their trailing habits and some of the most vibrant, iridescent foliage found in nature. Whether it’s the shimmering silver stripes of the ‘Zebrina’, the soft pink hues of the 'Nanouk,' these plants bring instant color and texture to your shelves.
At Over Grown, we love Tradescantia for their fast growth and ease of propagation. They are incredibly rewarding plants that can quickly transform a space with their lush vines.
Tradescantia Lighting
To maintain those deep purples, bright pinks, and silvery coloring, Tradescantia needs a generous amount of light.
- Ideal light conditions: Bright, indirect light is necessary for these plants to look their best. A spot near a south or west-facing window is ideal, as long as the light is not too intense.
- The colors: Light is the "fuel" for their color. If a Tradescantia is kept in too much shade, it will lose its variegation and turn a duller green.
- Avoid: While they love brightness, intense and direct sun can occasionally wash out the colors or cause the leaves to feel "crispy."
- Signs of improper light: "Leggy" growth is a clear sign the plant is stretching for more light. Sometimes it'll show through the leaves going pale as well. Try moving it to a sunnier location.
Tradescantia Watering
Tradescantia prefer to stay on the slightly more hydrated side, but they do not like to be waterlogged.
- How often to water: Water when the top couple inches of soil feels dry. They enjoy a consistent moisture level but need to breathe between waterings.
- Check the soil: Give the soil a quick touch-test before reaching for the watering can. In the summer, they may need more frequent attention due to their rapid growth rate.
- Avoid: Try to avoid getting water directly on the leaves or into the center of the plant, as their fleshy stems can be prone to rot if moisture sits on them for too long. To avoid this, try bottom watering! To do this, add water to a saucer, and allow the plant to soak it up, as opposed to soaking from the top. Just make sure to dump any extra water out that the plant didn't drink up.
- Signs of improper watering: Limp, wilted leaves usually mean the plant is thirsty, while mushy stems at the base are a sign of overwatering.
Tradescantia Soil and Fertilization
A well-draining soil that doesn't stay heavy is vital for the delicate root systems of these vines.

- Fertilizing: Because they grow so quickly, Tradescantia appreciate regular nutrients. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks during the spring and summer. Our liquid fertilizer drops are a simple, effective way to keep those colors popping all season long.
Tradescantia Humidity & Leaf Care
These plants are quite adaptable to average home humidity, but they certainly won't turn down a little extra moisture in the air.
- Methods to increase humidity: They generally do fine in standard conditions, but a nearby humidifier can help prevent the bottom leaves from drying out too quickly. For more humidity tips, check out our blog, “Humidity 101”.
- Leaf care: Because many varieties have delicate or slightly fuzzy leaves, they don't require the same "wipe down" as a larger leaf plant. Instead, focus on removing any dead or dried-out leaves near the base to keep the plant looking tidy and avoid dead foliage sitting on the soil.
Tradescantia Pests and Treatment
Tradescantia are relatively hardy, but their succulent-like stems can sometimes attract a few common pests.
- Common Pests: Keep an eye out for Mealybugs (white cottony fluff in the leaf joints) especially on the tender new growth. Also watch for Spider Mites, especially if the plant is stressed.
