Stromanthe Lighting
Stromanthes are native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil, where they thrive in the dappled light of the forest floor. They need brightness to maintain their variegation but are sensitive to harsh exposure.
- Ideal light conditions: Bright, indirect light is the key to a happy Stromanthe. An east-facing window is perfect, or a spot a few feet away from a west window where the light is filtered.
- The colors: The more indirect light they get, the more vibrant the pink and cream splashes will be. In lower light, the plant will produce more green to maximize photosynthesis, and the growth will slow down a bit.
- Avoid: Direct afternoon sun is the quickest way to bleach the beautiful variegation and cause the leaves to curl or burn.
- Signs of improper light: Faded colors or leaves that stay tightly curled during the day indicate the plant is stressed by too much light. If the new leaves are coming in solid green, it likely needs a brighter location.
Stromanthe Watering
Stromanthes prefer a "just right" moisture level, meaning they enjoy being consistently hydrated but cannot tolerate sitting in stagnant water.
- How often to water: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. They prefer to stay slightly moist, but not soaking wet.
- Check the soil: Use the finger test frequently. Depending on the season and humidity, they may need more frequent attention than some of your other plants.
- Avoid: Never let the soil dry out completely, as this will lead to immediate drooping and crispy foliage. On the other hand, a soggy bottom will lead to root rot.
- Pro-tip: Stromanthes can be sensitive to the minerals and chemicals in tap water. If possible, use distilled water to prevent the leaf tips from turning brown.
Stromanthe Soil and Fertilization
An airy soil that retains some moisture without becoming heavy is vital for a healthy Stromanthe root system.

Stromanthe Humidity & Leaf Care
If you want to keep a Stromanthe happy, you must think about the air. High humidity is the single most important factor in preventing crispy leaf edges.

- Clean the foliage: Their large, decorative leaves can collect dust, which hinders their ability to move and breathe. Gently wipe down the leaves with a damp, soft cloth every few weeks to keep them looking vivid and healthy.
Stromanthe Pests and Treatment
While relatively resilient, the high-humidity environment that Stromanthes love can occasionally attract certain pests if airflow is poor.
- Common Pests: Look out for Spider Mites, which thrive in dry air and appear as tiny speckles or fine webs. You might also occasionally see Mealybugs in the tight crevices of the new leaves.

- Causes: This is the most common issue and is almost always caused by low humidity or the minerals found in tap water.
- Solutions: Increase humidity immediately and switch to distilled water. You can trim away the brown edges with clean scissors, following the natural curve of the leaf.
Yellowing Leaves
- Causes: Usually a sign of overwatering or the soil staying too wet for too long.
- Solutions: Check the drainage of your pot and allow the top inch of soil to dry out a bit more before watering again.
Leaves Staying Curled Up
- Causes: This is a defense mechanism. The plant is either too dry, too hot, or receiving too much direct light and is trying to protect its surface area.
- Solutions: Check the soil moisture and move the plant to a slightly more shaded or cooler spot if the light is intense.
