Scheffleras, commonly known as Umbrella Trees, are beloved for their distinctive leaves that stem like the ribs of an umbrella. Whether you choose the large-leafed varieties or more compact ones, these plants bring a lush, canopy-like feel to any room. They are resilient, fast-growing, and highly adaptable, making them a fantastic choice for adding height and leafy texture to your indoor jungle.
At Over Grown, we love Scheffleras for their versatility! They can be grown as bushy floor plants, trained into elegant trees, or even found in beautiful variegated forms with splashes of creamy yellow.
Schefflera Lighting
Scheffleras are flexible when it comes to light, but their growth habit is a direct reflection of how much brightness they receive.
- Ideal light conditions: Bright, indirect light is needed for a full, lush plant. An east-facing window or a spot a few feet back from a south or west window is perfect.
- The colors: Variegated varieties need more light than solid green ones to maintain their creamy patterns. If kept in too much shade, the variegation may fade.
- Avoid: Direct, scorching afternoon sun can burn the leaves, leading to brown patches. On the other hand, very low light will cause the plant to become "leggy" and drop its lower leaves.
- Signs of improper light: If the stems are stretching toward the window and the new growth is sparse, your plant is asking for more light.
Schefflera Watering
These plants prefer and are way more tolerant of being slightly dry than being over-watered.
- How often to water: Water thoroughly when the top 75% of the soil feels dry. You want to saturate the root ball and then allow it to dry out significantly before watering again.
- Check the soil: Use your finger to test the moisture level deep in the pot. Scheffleras are sensitive to overwatering, which can quickly lead to root issues.
- Avoid: Letting the plant sit in a saucer of standing water. If the soil stays soggy for too long, the leaves may turn yellow and drop off suddenly.
- Signs of improper watering: Drooping leaves can indicate both under and overwatering, always check the soil before adding more. Wrinkled stems usually mean the plant is quite thirsty.
Schefflera Soil and Fertilization
A well-draining soil is essential for a healthy Schefflera, as it allows the roots to breathe between waterings.
- Potting medium: A high-quality, airy potting mix is a must. We use and recommend Rosy Soil’s Aroid mix, available in-store, which provides the organic matter and drainage these plants love. Check out our blog “All About Rosy” to learn more.
- Fertilizing: During the active growing season (spring and summer), apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks. Our liquid fertilizer drops are an easy way to provide the gentle nutrition your Umbrella Tree needs to reach new heights.
Schefflera Humidity & Leaf Care
While they are quite adaptable to average home humidity, Scheffleras appreciate a bit of tropical pampering.
- Methods to increase humidity: They handle standard home air well, but a nearby humidifier or grouping them with other plants can help prevent crispy leaf tips during the dry winter months. For more tips on humidity, visit our previous blog, “Humidity 101.”
- Clean the foliage: Those "umbrella" clusters will catch dust easily! Gently wipe the leaves with a soft, damp cloth every few weeks to keep them shiny and ensure they can photosynthesize efficiently.
Schefflera Pests and Treatment
Scheffleras can occasionally attract common indoor pests, especially if they are stressed or in very dry air.
- Common Pests: Watch for Mealybugs (white cottony fluff) and Scale (brown, shell-like bumps on stems). Spider Mites can also appear if the air is too dry.
- Treatment: Isolate the plant immediately and wipe down the leaves and stems. We recommend a thorough application of our Plant Protect Spray to eliminate any pests. For more help, visit our blog, “Identifying & Treating Houseplant Pests.”
How to keep your Umbrella Tree thriving:
- Lighting: Bright, indirect light keeps the plant full and variegated.
- Watering: Let the top 75% of the soil dry out before soaking thoroughly.
- Pruning: Don't be afraid to trim your Schefflera to maintain its shape!
