What Makes a Plant Rare? And Does It Actually Matter?

The Three Things That Actually Make a Plant Rare

In the professional horticultural world, true rarity usually comes down to three specific factors:

1. Limited Natural Range or Habitat

Some plants only grow in highly specific, localized ecosystems. Because their native habitats are so small or endangered, these plants are genuinely scarce in the wild, and getting legally sourced mother plants into cultivation takes years of careful conservation work.

2. Slow or Difficult Propagation

A plant might be common in its native environment but incredibly difficult to reproduce in a greenhouse setting. If a species grows at a slow pace, has a low success rate with cuttings, or has an unstable genetic mutation, the supply will always remain low.

3. High Demand vs. Low Supply

This is pure market economics. A plant can be relatively easy to grow, but if a sudden spike in interest occurs and thousands of collectors all want the same species at the exact same time, it becomes artificially "rare" simply because growers haven't had the months or years required to scale up production.

The Social Media Effect

It’s impossible to talk about rare plants without talking about the internet. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram have fundamentally changed how plants are categorized.

Some plants are labeled "rare" simply because a few major creators featured them in a viral video, creating a temporary wave of intense demand. In these cases, the plant isn't actually hard to find or difficult to grow, it’s just trending! A few months later, once commercial greenhouses catch up and flood the market, that "$100 rare specimen" often becomes a standard $20 staple on all plant nursery shelves.

Does Rarity Actually Matter to You?

The honest answer? Only if it affects the price tag or the care routine. A plant’s rarity status has zero correlation with its beauty or how much joy it will bring to your home. A common, inexpensive plant can look just as stunning and lush on a bookshelf as a high-end collector piece. Rarity only matters if you are specifically drawn to the unique visual traits of a collector item, like highly unusual leaf textures or unique variegation, and you are willing to pay the price required to get them.

At Over Grown, we stock rare plants in the shops because they are genuinely beautiful, genetically interesting, and fun to grow, not just because they carry a high price tag. We love the interesting, structural, and unique pieces of the plant world, and we want to share those with fellow enthusiasts who appreciate them for what they are!

How to Shop Smart: What to Ask Before You Buy

Before you pay a premium for a plant labeled "rare," ask these three practical questions:
